PUF Inlet for High Volume Air Sampler

Model PUF. This is a polyurethane foam inlet for high volume air samplers that collects semi-volatile organic compounds in the vapour phase as well as particulate matter. It mounts on the shelter base pan of a standard sampler in place of the usual filter holder and holds a foam plug downstream of the filter. Monitoring laboratories use it for POPs, dioxin, PAH and pesticide programmes.

What Is a PUF Inlet?

PUF stands for polyurethane foam. A PUF inlet is an accessory for high volume air samplers that adds a foam plug downstream of the filter, so that semi-volatile organic compounds present in the vapour phase are collected as well as the particulate matter. It replaces the usual filter holder on the shelter base pan of a standard sampler and is used in POPs, dioxin, PAH and pesticide monitoring programmes.

How PUF Sampling Works

Air is drawn through the sampler at high volume flow. Particles are retained on a quartz or glass fibre filter, and the compounds that pass through the filter in the gas phase are adsorbed on the polyurethane foam plug behind it. Because both fractions are taken from the same measured air volume, laboratories can report particulate and vapour phase concentrations from a single sampling run. Sampling periods are usually 24 hours, after which the filter and the foam plug are extracted and analysed separately.

Construction and Fit

The inlet is machined from aluminum and anodized, measures 150x160x290 mm and weighs 3.0 kgs. It mounts on the standard shelter base pan footprint, so a monitoring team can convert an existing high volume sampler for SVOC work in minutes and return it to routine particulate sampling afterwards. Anodizing keeps the surface easy to clean between campaigns and protects it from corrosion during long outdoor deployments. The part is available from stock under ERP numbers 98080-000-400 and 98080-000-402 and is packed in a 22x22x32cm carton.

Applications and Warranty

Typical users include environmental protection agencies, contract laboratories, universities and industrial hygiene groups studying semi-volatile organic compounds in ambient air, near waste incinerators, at industrial sites and in agricultural areas where pesticides are applied. Where a programme needs a longer sampling train or a breakthrough check, the inlet can be combined with a second PUF cartridge holder. Every PUF inlet is covered by a three-year warranty.

Samples the Vapour Phase, Not Only Particles

The PUF inlet holds a polyurethane foam plug downstream of the filter, so semi-volatile organic compounds that pass through the filter in the vapour phase are trapped on the foam instead of being lost. One sampling run therefore yields both particulate and gas phase data from the same measured air volume, so a laboratory does not need a second sampler to quantify the two fractions.

Fits a Standard High Volume Sampling Train

The inlet mounts on the shelter base pan of a standard high volume air sampler in place of the usual filter holder, using the same footprint. Monitoring teams can convert an existing sampler for SVOC work in minutes and change it back for routine particulate sampling afterwards.

Compact, Light and Anodized

Measuring 150x160x290 mm and weighing 3.0 kgs, the PUF inlet is machined from aluminum and anodized so that it resists corrosion and cleans up easily between campaigns. It ships in a 22x22x32cm carton, fits within the normal shelter envelope of a high volume sampler, and is held in stock under ERP numbers 98080-000-400 and 98080-000-402.

Built for POPs, Dioxin and PAH Programmes

Environmental agencies and contract laboratories use PUF sampling for persistent organic pollutants, dioxins, polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons and pesticide monitoring, usually with a quartz filter for the particulate fraction and a foam plug for the gas phase fraction.

Factory Supply and Three-Year Warranty

T4 AIR SAMPLER manufactures air sampling hardware and spare parts in Foshan and supports OEM orders as well as single-unit replacements. Replacement foam plugs, filter holders and spare gaskets can be ordered at the same time. Every PUF inlet carries a three-year warranty.
