PTFE Membrane Filter Paper 47 mm for Air Sampling

Model FP-03 is a 47 mm PTFE membrane filter, supplied 50 pieces per box for low volume air samplers. The membrane is chemically inert and contains no binder, so it is the right medium when the collected particulate will be analysed for elements, ions or organic species rather than simply weighed. The 1.0 micrometre pore size retains fine particulate while keeping the pressure drop within the range of a low volume pump.

When to Use PTFE Instead of Glass Fiber

Glass fiber is the usual medium when the only result needed is the mass of particulate collected. PTFE takes over when the deposit will be examined further. Because the membrane is chemically inert and free of binder, it does not dissolve, shed fibres or release compounds during digestion and extraction, so the analysis measures the sample rather than the filter.

Programmes that run both types of measurement often keep one sampler and simply change the media, since the disc format and the holder are identical.

Pore Size and Sampling Performance

At 1.0 micrometre, the pore size is small enough to retain fine particulate with good efficiency, while the open structure of the membrane keeps the pressure drop low enough for a low volume pump to hold its set flow. The result is a sampling train that stays within the volume range required by the method without needing a larger pump or a shorter sampling period.

Hydrophobic Behaviour in the Field

Water does not wet through a PTFE membrane. On a humid day, at a coastal site or during fog events, the collected particles therefore stay on the upstream surface and do not migrate into the pore structure, and the flow rate does not drift downward as the filter loads. That behaviour is one of the main reasons the medium is chosen for sites close to the sea or in tropical climates.

Fitting, Packing and Ordering

The disc is diameter 47 mm and loads into the same low volume filter holder as the glass fiber paper, seated on the FPS-01 filter support screen so that it cannot deform under vacuum. Fifty discs weigh 0.06 kgs in a 14x14x3cm carton. The item is listed under ERP number 63012-000-075 with a seven day lead time, and as a consumable it carries no warranty.

Inert Membrane for Chemical Analysis

PTFE is chemically inert and the membrane is made without binder, so the filter does not react with the deposit and does not add material of its own to the sample. That is what makes it suitable for digestion, extraction, ion analysis and elemental work, where the filter itself must not interfere with the measurement.

1.0 Micrometre Pore Size

A 1.0 micrometre pore size retains fine particulate while keeping the pressure drop acceptable for a low volume pump. The flow rate stays stable through a normal sampling period, so the sampled volume remains within the range the method expects without having to oversize the pump.

Hydrophobic in Humid Air

The membrane repels water, which helps where samples are taken in humid, coastal or tropical air. Moisture does not wet through the filter, so the collected deposit stays on the surface and the pressure drop does not climb during the run.

Standard 47 mm Format

The disc is diameter 47 mm and therefore fits the same low volume filter holder and the same FPS-01 filter support screen as the glass fiber version. Laboratories can switch between the two media without buying a second holder or changing the cassette, and both can be kept in stock so the medium is chosen on the day of sampling.

Small, Light, Stocked

Fifty discs per box weigh 0.06 kgs and pack into 14x14x3cm, so shipping and storage cost very little. The item is listed under ERP number 63012-000-075 with a seven day lead time. As a consumable it carries no warranty.

Why choose a PTFE membrane rather than glass fiber?
PTFE is chemically inert and binder free, so it does not interfere with digestion, extraction or ion and element analysis. Glass fiber remains the practical choice when only the collected mass has to be weighed.
The standard membrane is 1.0 micrometre, which retains fine particulate while keeping the pressure drop within the capacity of a low volume pump.
Yes. PTFE is hydrophobic, so moisture does not wet through the filter and the collected deposit stays on the upstream surface even in humid or coastal air.
Yes. It is diameter 47 mm and fits the same low volume filter holder and the same FPS-01 filter support screen, so no additional hardware is needed.
