PM2.5 Impactor for Low Volume Air Sampler

Model PM2.5-IPT is an inertial impactor that removes particles larger than 2.5 micrometres from a low volume sampling stream by impaction on a greased plate. It is the classic PM2.5 size selector used together with the PM10 low volume inlet assembly, so a single sampling train can deliver both the PM10 and the PM2.5 fraction. The plate lifts out by hand for cleaning and re-greasing, and the unit suits monitoring agencies as well as integrators servicing existing stations.

What Is a PM2.5 Impactor?

The PM2.5-IPT is a size-selective head for low volume air samplers. It uses inertial impaction to remove particles larger than 2.5 micrometres, so the filter downstream collects the fine fraction that most air quality programmes report. The head is machined from aluminum alloy, clear anodized, and measures 76.2 mm in diameter with an overall length of 205 mm.

Historically the impactor is the classic PM2.5 selector, and it remains the configuration used by many national networks because the principle is simple to explain, easy to audit and inexpensive to maintain.

How the Impactor Works

Ambient air enters the head and is accelerated through a nozzle. Particles larger than 2.5 micrometres carry too much inertia to follow the bending airstream, so they strike a greased impaction plate and stay there. The finer particles continue past the plate and are carried to the filter cassette. The plate is removed by hand, cleaned, re-greased and refitted before the next run.

The pressure drop across the stage is low, so a normal low volume pump and the existing flow control can be used without modification. Service work is limited to the plate itself and to an occasional check that the nozzle is free of debris; there are no electrical parts to maintain.

Pairing with the PM10 Low Volume Inlet

When the impactor is installed on the PM10 low volume inlet assembly, the train collects the PM10 fraction at the inlet and the PM2.5 fraction at the impaction stage in a single sampling period. Operators therefore obtain both size fractions from one visit, one pump and one filter change, which simplifies scheduling at remote stations.

Because the impaction plate is a separate part, a station can be kept running from a small stock of plates prepared in the laboratory. The stage needs no electrical power or calibration between runs, so the impactor suits remote sites where service visits are infrequent.

Applications and Packing

The impactor is used by environmental agencies, ambient monitoring networks, research institutes, industrial fenceline monitoring programmes and laboratories validating low-cost sensors. Each unit is packed in a 10x10x23 cm carton, ships from stock under ERP number 98082-000-401 and carries a three year warranty.

Proven Inertial Size Selection

Inertial impaction is the established way to select the PM2.5 fraction in a low volume sampler. Air is accelerated through a nozzle, and particles larger than 2.5 micrometres cannot follow the airstream around the greased plate, so they are captured. Field staff who already operate impactor-based stations need no extra training.

PM10 and PM2.5 from One Train

The impactor is designed for use with the PM10 low volume inlet assembly. Installed together, one train reports both fractions from a single setup, which is useful for programmes that publish PM10 and PM2.5 side by side and want the two values to originate from the same air mass.

Fast Plate Maintenance

The impaction plate comes out by hand and can be cleaned, dried and re-greased in a few minutes. Because it is a separate part, a spare plate can be prepared in the laboratory and swapped in on site, so the sampler is back in service almost immediately.

Light and Corrosion Resistant

At 0.7 kgs, with a diameter of 76.2 mm and a length of 205 mm, the impactor adds almost no load to the inlet and can be carried in the same case as the sampler. It is machined from aluminum alloy and clear anodized, so the internal surfaces resist oxidation and repeated cleaning.

Stock Item with Three Year Warranty

Impactors are held in stock under ERP number 98082-000-401, so replacements and spares ship without a long production wait. OEM enquiries for engraved logos, alternative alloys and private-label cartons are welcome, with factory-direct pricing on quantity orders. Spare impaction plates can be ordered with the head, so a station can be equipped for a full year of sampling in one shipment.

How often does the impaction plate need fresh grease?
Apply a thin, even film before each sampling run, or whenever the plate looks dry. Because the plate is removable, a freshly greased spare can be prepared in the laboratory and exchanged in the field to save time.
Yes. The PM2.5-IPT is designed for the PM10 low volume inlet assembly, so a single train collects the PM10 and the PM2.5 fraction in one sampling period.
None. The impaction plate is lifted out by hand, and cleaning only requires a lint-free wipe, the grease you already use and a flat surface to work on.
Yes. The impactor ships from stock under ERP number 98082-000-401 and carries a three year warranty. Spare impaction plates can be ordered at the same time.
Yes. We can quote the impactor together with the PM10 low volume inlet assembly or as part of a complete low volume sampling train with pump, flow control and filter holder.
